"Mounted soldiers in flashing armor and uniforms outlined in gold, the Royal Guard is meant to protect and care for the people of Home no matter what."
THE ROYAL GUARD
"Most people are able to use their internal magic from birth once they recognize that blood magic is a thing. There are special cases, however, as not every individual is the same..."
MAGIC SCHOOLS
"Theorizing about blood magic is to treat blood magic as a natural phenomenon that should be investigated like any other. During Carson's reign, this behavior was put on display when the higher ups were hellbent on defining the ins-and-outs of blood magic, no matter the cost."
BLOOD EXPERIMENTS
Technology in Home
Home in many ways is a mix of technology. This is, in part, because of magic being available. Generally, the setting is "high fantasy medieval," so characters can cast spells based on their blood color and there are creatures both normal and monstrous that pose a danger to humans.
Technology in the medieval period was limited to largely hand crafted items. Furniture, clothing, and weapons were more functional. Later in the period, as science and the understanding of mechanical devices was rediscovered from the lost Romans, low-level technology was applied to everyday life. Such improvements were basic understanding of pulleys and gears, as well as architectural innovations like the arch and indoor plumbing. Early pipes such as under the Romans and later Medieval were clay, but later, lead and copper were able to be made. Eventually, as early industrial technology began to evolve, cast iron and steel pipes could be created.
Home has developed indoor plumbing so its citizens can take hot baths, showers, and flush toilets. The latter means Home has advanced technology and science to the point where things like steel pipes, wires, and cable can be consistently produced in quantity at a reasonable cost. Along with plumbing, sewers exist separately in each district of Home. In other words, the Castle, Nadia, Amelia, Oriel, and Silas all have their own separate water supply and sewage system. Why? It doesn't make sense to have a wall protect each district if a monster can just come in using the sewer system! So characters can assume when in all the districts of the city, they have access to hygienic facilities and clean water. Oriel may sometimes be the exception purely due to their poor industrialization.
It is the largest district of all and was the last to be built. Oriel, as a district, is the poorest, but also the most important. It's the least developed, more of a collection of villages and settlements carved from the wilderness, but has the largest arable land and is the source for much of Home's raw resources. Some locations like Spring Village only have the beginnings of indoor plumbing and a sewer system, but other places like Hythe at best have 'outhouses' and local natural water sources; streams and wells. The Bastille is an exception in Oriel. The Bastille, as the prison of Home, has both indoor plumbing and a sewer system. Both are guarded against sabotage or escape.
Industrial Technology
Early Industrial Technology used ‘belt’ driven machinery. A large leather belt would turn a main shaft. From the main shaft, using gears and other belts machines like saws and lathes were powered. The power source for the main shaft was normally a water wheel, or horses/oxens/mules were used to turn them. As steam was invented, the piston could be converted into a spinning or turning motion, or vice versa, that was needed to power early industrial machinery. Hence ‘machine shops’ could now be moved away from rivers or large areas that required animals to power the shop. Steam power altered the quantity and quality of available manufactured goods.
Home has early steam power. For a time period allegory, think early 1800s earth with a little Edwardian (Pre-WWI) mixed in with a ‘Steam Punk’ flare. So Home, for the most part, has indoor plumbing, readily available mass produced goods of quality, and some steam power. Other things like lighting are either oil, or magically produced. So, in Nadia and Silas, the street lamps are typically magic and light up at night, while Amelia and Oriel has lamp lighters in the morning and evening hours. Most parts of Oriel rely on the individual producing their own light.
Firearms & Airships
Gunpowder has only recently been discovered. Firearms in Home do exist but are limited to large mortar and cannon, and matchlock muskets. A crossbow is still faster and cheaper to use and own.
Airships and the like do not exist yet. Because of the shield keeping monsters out, any experimentation in Lighter than Air travel carried the danger of being blown outside of the dome. Because of the latter, balloons and like technology are known, but have not been used for exploration, defense or travel.
Communication & "The Runners Guild"
Communication in and between districts can be done magically and there is a rudimentary telegraph/signal system between the walls. The wall defense communicates and raises the alarm in emergencies using a combination of light (magical or bonfire), flag (semaphore), sound (gongs/ bells) and runners. And recently a interesting device that can ‘talk’ a message using a wire using a code of beeps (telegraph). However for the most part, everyday messages are delivered using Runners.
Runners are a type of person who are tested and able to carry and deliver messages for pay. By their office, Runners, if making a delivery, can go anywhere in the city that is required for them to deliver a message. And by showing their badge of identification, they can pass quickly and easily through the gates to each District. In times of emergency, Runners will be sent throughout the city to find and inform the Guard and Adventurers to have them report where they need to be. Runners are also considered ‘types of guards’ in their own right as they often have to protect their deliveries, especially in high crime areas like Oriel. Therefore Runners are allowed to be armed and use magic in defense means. Runners are paid by the delivery. The faster, more valuable the delivery the higher the pay.
