Magic Items & Artifacts:

In the case of alchemy and magic items, various combinations of ingredients, both mundane and magical in nature, are needed to produce potions, powders, salves, and even pills or tablets. Two very important ingredients in alchemy and magic forging are:

Manacore

Manacore is a mineral that is almost 'pure' magic. A magical battery of sorts. In its raw form, Manacore is the most valuable. However, other forms of Manacore are created naturally by exposure to the elements and minerals around the deposit.

For example, if Manacore was found near a vein of silver, then that Manacore would have curative properties. While being beneficial to the healing arts, it would become useless in something meant to deal damage or poison.

Manacores can be found in the wild or dug up from the ground, much like other minerals. Manacores are crucial in forging magical items and gear.

Sagegrass

Sagegrass is unremarkable except for its distinct 'blue' color which occurs in all seasons. The plant itself would be harmless except it contains a large amount of magic for being a simple plant.

Sagegrass is considered a rare commodity. Beyond being blue in color, it grows in areas where magic seems to be prevalent, and only in clumps. The plant either concentrates magic or actually creates its own magical energy.

Typically, if you're near a Manacore, you're going to find bits of Sagegrass. It can be lethal if consumed in large amounts raw. Sagegrass is crucial in alchemy.

Combining a manacore with a monster part or any other ingredient will result in a manacore with special properties; these special properties can be used to activate runes that are compatible, thus giving gear magical effects. Combiing sagegrass with other ingredients typically result in a solvent good for potions instead of runes.

tl;dr - To make magical gear, you need a rune, a manacore, and an ingredient.
